Honeydew police trade fire with gang after armed robbery in Cosmo City

COSMO CITY - A shooting incident led to the arrest of two suspects.

Honeydew police and a gang of armed robbers were involved in a shooting incident in Itsaseng Informal Settlement, near Cosmo City, in the early hours of March 17.

This led to two arrests. “At 02:20 in the morning, a man was woken up by a gang of five males kicking open his front door and running inside,” explained Honeydew Police Station spokesperson, Warrant Officer Dave Stanton.

“He was robbed of various household items at gunpoint. The suspects then brazenly broke open the doors of four other back rooms on the property, robbing the various occupants of electrical items such as plasma TVs and cellphones.”

Honeydew police arrived just minutes after the gang left, and began looking through the open veld for traces of them.

“They managed to discover a recent foot trail in the dark and followed it on foot for a long distance that led out of Cosmo City to the adjacent Itsoseng Informal Settlement. As Honeydew police approached a premises that the trail led to, the gang began shooting at the police and attempted to flee. Police returned fire and no one was injured.”

Two suspects were arrested and all stolen property was recovered and taken to Honeydew Police Station. Police also seized housebreaking implements and a pistol with live ammunition that had its serial number filed off.

Stanton complimented the commitment and dedication of Honeydew Crime Prevention Unit members and added that Honeydew investigation officers were currently investigating as to whether or not this gang has been involved in other such criminal activities.
