Theft in Randburg Square parking lot

RANDBURG CBD – A resident argues that shopping centre management was unhelpful and told her the cameras were not working.

A woman is challenging the management of Randburg Square’s statement that CCTV cameras were working, following the theft of R1 500-worth of items at the centre’s parking lot.

Portia Mnisi maintains that following the theft of the items, which were mostly clothing, from her car boot outside the entrance on level three, security guards and management informed her that the CCTV cameras on-site were not working and nothing could be done.

She opened a case with Randburg Police Station, and spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja confirmed the matter is being investigated.

Centre manager, Hayley Wattleworth, however, told Randburg Sun that Randburg Square’s CCTV cameras were working at the time of the alleged incident. “We have been extremely helpful in assisting where we can,” Wattleworth said.

“When any crime is reported to us, we always encourage reporting it to the SAPS. We may only release CCTV footage to an officer of the law who provides the relevant case number, and we work closely with the case officer, giving our full support to their investigation. We believe the CCTV recording will be particularly helpful in this police investigation, as our own enquiry into the matter confirmed there was no sign of forced entry or damage to the vehicle.”

Furthermore, the centre manager said in addition to CCTV surveillance, a security team patrols the entire mall and its parking areas, including the one in question. “We also provide a tenant parking area with guarded gate access control, which is available to those working at the centre and where this particular vehicle could have been parked.”

This is because Mnisi works at the post office at Randburg Square.

When told this, Mnisi stuck to her guns saying centre management told her the cameras were not working and claimed they had not once contacted her following the incident.

Captain Maja urged the public to check that their cars are properly locked before leaving their vehicles. They should also not place valuables insight, as this can attract potential criminals, he said.
