Local learners excel in art competition

BOSKRUIN – Three local learners who recently attended the South African Championships of performing arts were chosen for Team SA.


Three local learners emerged as some of the country’s cream of the crop after recently participating in the South African Championships of Performing Arts.

Grade 4 learner Owen Welthagen from Newton House School in Boskruin, and Grade 9 Jared Browning and Grade 6 Olivia Welthagen both from Kings College Bryanston represented Gauteng at the national competition.

The trio qualified for team South Africa 2022 and will represent the country at the World Championships in Los Angeles in July next year. The competition was held in Rustenburg from October 1 to 10.

The youngsters competed in various categories including acting, dance, vocal, instrumental and modelling.

According to Louise Welthagen, to qualify for the World Championships, participants have to receive a gold medal or score over 92% to meet the high standards of the world championships. She added that all three learners attend the Linda Theron Drama Academy.

Jared scooped two gold and three bronze, while Olivia won three gold medals and Owen secured two gold, one silver and two bronze.

“It took months of hard work and dedication to prepare for this prestigious event, but with such huge achievements, it was very well worth it,” Louise said.
