Almost half the learners at Hoërskool Randburg have been vaccinated after a two-day vaccination drive at the school.
About 320 children received their first Pfizer Covid-19 vaccination on October 27 and 28 when the school initiated its first drive after government gave the go-ahead for children aged 12 to 17 to be vaccinated.
Matric learners (many of whom had already received their first jab elsewhere) were not included in the drive as they were busy with exams.
But the school has plans to host another vaccination drive at the end of November or early December when it is convenient for them to participate.
“We have seen children eager to be vaccinated across all the grades, and about the same number across the age groups,” said deputy principal and Covid-19 officer at the school, Francois Vosloo.
“Parents have also thanked us that their children can be vaccinated without them having to go out and wait in queues elsewhere. Of course, it is not compulsory, and some have opted to not get vaccinated. This is just a service we are providing to the children, and through them for the safety of their families.”
He concluded it was good to get closer to a form of normality, and the school may open up vaccinations to parents and siblings not at the school, in the coming months.
