Let’s keep the city clean

WINDSOR EAST – The Windsor Community Cleaning Association were celebrated for their efforts in keeping the community clean.

Windsor Community Cleaning Association (WCCA) was recently awarded a certificate of excellence.

The group received this award in recognition of their efforts of diverting recyclable waste from landfill sites and keeping the City of Johannesburg clean.

The certification was a joint programme of the City, Pikitup and various other stakeholders, namely Gauteng Department of Rural Development and The Department of Environment and Forestry.

Patrick Kule, owner of the association, said he was humbled to be recognised for their hard work. “Our hope is that we can inspire communities, and residents associations to come together and be the main role players in the changing of their environment. Most of the neglect is because we continue to ignore grime. We have chosen to deal with grime and create recycling opportunities from dumps and waste,” he said.

Other projects they are passionate about is the restoration of wetlands, rivers and streams. Kule explained they have identified river-based waste, illegal recycling in park streams and public places as a danger to our environment and water security.

Residents in Bromhof, Sonneglans, Randpark Ridge, Aldara Park as well as Albertville and Bosmont, have contacted the association to assist with the upkeep of public spaces and with the rise of illegal recycling.

“Our task is to educated reclaimers, form cleaning-up partnerships with them and the residents associations. Through awareness and continuously engaging the community we can be a zero-waste society,” concluded Kule.
