School news like never before

FONTAINEBLEAU – Learners live stream their news broadcasts to register classes.

Hoërskool Randburg is proud of its new news agency, which covers every story of interest coming in and out of the school.

Teachers and learners are both involved in the Randburg Nuusagentskap, which streams live news broadcasts to register classes every odd week.

They try to balance their news and cover a variety of sport, cultural, academics, special events, features and other stories.

Recently, the learner-reporters spoke to members of the Johannesburg Student Council about their responsibilities.

One broadcast that is in the pipeline will feature a school band, and include their music video, while another broadcast will look at a learner who is a successful ballet dancer, while another will interview a young stage make-up artist.

“Our principal, Mr [Pieter] Booysen, used to send news videos about the school but after lockdown we wanted to do something different,” explained one of the teacher coordinators for the group, Tania du Plessis.

“We decided to make the communication catered to learners so that they can be involved in the news that affects them. It has been very successful, the learners enjoy it.”

She remarked that they would never have thought of doing this, if it were not for the nationwide lockdown, so there was at least this silver lining.
