Joburg Roads Agency responds

BLAIRGOWRIE – Johannesburg Roads Agency tells school it can apply for additional traffic calming measures through a petition.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency has responded following concerns of reckless drivers putting schoolchildren at risk in Blairgowrie.

Blairgowrie Primary School, to which most of the schoolchildren in question go, lays down temporary speed bumps on Keith Avenue each day and has put measures in place to control traffic and make the pick-up and drop-off points as safe as possible.

The school also communicated with the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) about the issue, and had a traffic engineer conduct an assessment of the situation.

The roads agency’s spokesperson, Lucia Mhlanga, has since advised that those who wish to initiate traffic-calming measures should contact the agency.

“Speed, in general, relates to human behaviour and is best addressed through stringent speed-law enforcement,” she said.

“Engineering is the last resort to addressing speed-related issues. If rumble strips exist on the road, additional traffic calming can be added, provided it is warranted. The procedure to apply for a traffic-calming measure is through a petitions submission (by the ward councillor and the community) to the City’s Office of the Speaker, and thereafter allocated to the relevant department. If allocated to the JRA, our traffic engineers will assess the road and determine the additional traffic-calming measure to be implemented.”

A petitions register can be found on the City of Johannesburg’s website or at the offices on 158 Loveday Street in Braamfontein, where it can be filled, signed and submitted.

Alternatively, one can email the petition to peterku@joburg.org.za.
