RAND PARK – Learners bring back high grades and symbols for their public speaking.

Rand Park High School is proud to share that their learners participated in and performed incredibly well in the South African Literacy Association’s Public Speaking (Salaps) event and the Speech and Drama College’s Public Speaking Festival.

Forty-six Rand Park learners entered Salaps with all of them scoring at least a B symbol. According to the school’s Heather Robinson, in line with Covid-19 protocols, learners participated in a pre-recorded session and recordings were submitted to the adjudicators for assessment.

Of the 46 learners, 26 of them scored an A+ symbol (90–94 per cent), 19 of them achieved an A symbol (80–89 per cent) and one was awarded a B symbol (70– 79 per cent) during the first round. Additionally, 27 of the 46 learners have been selected to represent Gauteng in the semi-final round. The school thanked their cameraman, Grade 9 learner Seth Moodley who assisted with the recordings of each entrant.

Rand Park High was also thrilled with the performance of their learners in the Speech and Drama College’s Public Speaking Festival. According to Robinson, the junior teams working in teams of four had to choose a ‘diamond’ quote to suggest a topic and then design a presentation around that.

The senior teams’ topic involved capturing the essence of diamonds in all their facets. The categories of the individual speaker and the trophy team were able to choose a topic to their liking. The school’s Olivia Davies, who participated as an individual speaker achieved an A+ result for her performance while the two Grade 11 teams were awarded the same symbol for their abilities, hard work and discipline to the art.

The school’s speakers were commended for their punchy and powerful introductions, effective modulation and well-woven links that reflected their vocal agility.

Additionally, the adjudicators noted that Rand Park High School had competent teams showing excellent preparation and slick delivery. Speeches were well-written and speakers delivered visual images to grip the audience.
