Volunteers wanted

LINDEN – The chance to make a difference in the community and those effected by crime.

Victim Support Unit looks to enlist new volunteers.

The Victim Support Unit of the Linden Community Policing Forum calls on interested members of the community to join them to be entrusted with the sole responsibility and task of attending to the emotional and psychological needs of crime victims in the Linden Policing Precinct.

According to the unit’s Di Constable, people looking to volunteer can expect to help the community, build and strengthen relationships and make a difference.
She said, “Joining the Victim Support Unit gives you the chance to make a difference in someone’s life after a very traumatic event. A chance to work with and help the police in their very difficult job. A chance for camaraderie with fellow like-minded volunteers and the joy at the knowledge that you made a difference by your very presence.”

Constable added that it’s not always doom and gloom as there will be lots of fun to be had as well.
Those interested are advised to contact Constable as they will need to apply to be considered. There is a list of requirements that needs to be met and these include:

  • Available both night and day as the unit operates 24/7
  • Over the age of 25
  • Access to private transport

Successful applicants will then attend a six-week training course on victim support, trauma and first responder skills. This will help equip them to be able to respond to crime scenes.
Constable added, “They will then have a period of shadowing seasoned first responders to be sure they are au fait (having a good or detailed knowledge of) with procedures.”
