A united youth promote change

KYA SAND – The United Youth Project recently held a safety campaign that sought to protect the safety of all community members.

In a valiant attempt to ensure the safety of their community and its people, a safety campaign project initiated by United Youth Project was recently held in Kya Sand.

The project, which is a non-profit organisation, is in partnership with various community groups and residents. For this campaign to be a further success, they worked with Douglasdale SAPS and the Community Policing Forum.

Community social activist Tshepo Marakala said it was important for them to come together, more especially as we face such difficult times in our democratic society. “It was imperative for us to stand up together and confront the current protest action which is a threat to our democracy and a violation of our rights as citizens.”
He added that it is completely unacceptable that people are threatening our safety as citizens and destroying public and private infrastructure.

For Marakala, this country belongs to all who live in it as stipulated in the Constitution and each one has pledged in support to abide by it. “So when one is not happy about it, they must follow the democratic processes by voting for their preferred leaders to lead them,” he stressed.

The organisation decided to do the safety campaign project in the area based in the north to discourage community members from participating in a protest action that, according to Marakala, has ripped SA apart and it is leading to food shortages and hunger.

It is his opinion that members of the community do not deserve to live in fear as if they don’t have a functioning constitution in the country. “We are saying to you that you are not alone, and we must volunteer our time and resources to do the safety campaign project awareness within the different areas by talking to the young, old, black and white.”

He said the elders know the sad history of this country and they must teach the youth about the importance of this young democracy and the need to protect it. “We only have one South Africa and burning it will not solve the problem but destroy it. We love it here.”

The organisation is appealing to all to reach out and be united by joining them during this painful moment in our history.
