Desserts That are trending in 2021

Stork has the best dessert trends for 2021 for you to create at home.

Due to lockdowns, we’ve spent extended periods of time at home, with many of us experimenting with baking recipes in the kitchen. Instead of ordering birthday cakes, we opted to bake them. Instead of buying hot cross buns, we chose to make them. 2021 is the year of delving into our imagination. Let us take common ingredients to a whole new level.

Here are a few traditional desserts that have transformed from ordinary to EXTRAordinary:

Piñata Cakes

Piñata Cakes are a massive trend this year. These spectacular cakes offer a hidden surprise inside. As you cut into the cake, the centre spills out with any treat that the baker’s imagination could concoct. Would you like fruit? Or maybe malt chocolate balls? Perhaps mini chocolates? This incredibly moist and flavourful layer cake is perfect for celebrations.

Macaron Sandwiches

If you love macarons and find ice cream irresistible, then behold the next best thing: the macaron ice cream sandwich! It is simply a macaron, sliced open and stuffed with ice cream. This delicious sandwich is on the trending list and is perfect for any occasion. To make delectable macarons at home, ensure you use the correct baking ingredients.

Tip: If you’ve run out of butter, consider baking with margarine as a yummy substitute.

Dessert Oats

Oats. Hear us out. Yes, these are the same oats you eat for breakfast, and in cereal bars, except this year, oats can be eaten as a dessert. Oat-based chocolate milk, ice cream, yoghurt, double cream and even cheese are fast becoming popular! An added benefit is that they are gluten-free and one of the healthiest desserts out there. So if you have specific allergens, oats may be a safer option to eat.

Yummy Cacao

Cacao is often confused with cocoa, and although they are pretty similar, the manufacturing process is different. Processed at a higher temperature, cocoa usually contains added sugar when packaged. In comparison, cacao is processed at a low temperature and is still considered raw. Once it is milled into powder, it contains a much higher quantity of nutrients and enzymes. Since bakers are more conscious about ingredients, many opt to use cacao to create yummy chocolate desserts.

Clashing Combinations

This year, a massive trend has been the idea of mixing sweet with savoury. From French fries dipped in vanilla ice cream, dessert pizzas (an original pizza base with a range of dessert toppings) and crisps covered in milk chocolate or caramel. These combinations sound strange but are worth giving a try! You will be surprised at how well sweet and savoury go together.

These are just some of the rising dessert trends of 2021.
