Bribery accused sentenced to 25 months in prison

HONEYDEW – A Cosmo City man was sentenced to 25 months' imprisonment after he tried to bribe a Honeydew police officer.

The Honeydew police would like to congratulate their officers for standing up against corruption after the successful conviction of a Cosmo City man after he had tried to bribe a police officer.

Honeydew police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan said that the suspect was arrested after attempting to bribe one of their officers with R300 to get out of being arrested for selling liquor without a licence at his Cosmo City liquor outlet in March.

The accused was sentenced in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court to a collective 25 months’ imprisonment or a R25 000 fine, as well as a suspended sentence of four years so long as the accused does not engage in any other corrupt activity or possess a firearm.

“We would like to give a big congratulations to our officers who stand up against corruption and ensure that those who are corrupt see the full force of the law. We would like to make it known that corruption will not be tolerated, both from the public or our officers themselves,” said Muthan.
