Burst affects Blairgowrie businesses

BLAIRGOWRIE – Joburg Water fixes water leak two days after it was reported, but a week after it started.

Four businesses suffered for nearly a week when a water pipe burst near the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Republic Road.

The pipe burst on the property of Uriel International Auction on 8 April, but was only reported to Joburg Water for the first time on 14 April, after local plumbers found it was a municipal pipe.

The leak was eventually repaired on 16 April but not before water flowed through three other businesses at a constant rate, seeping through the ground to form puddles at new places every day.

Staff from the different businesses reported the matter multiple times in the last three days of the leak, collecting a stack of reference numbers; eager to see the pipe fixed before the damage became severe.

“Hundreds of thousands of litres of water have been lost,” said Jarqu Ferreira of SA Motor Corporation.

“The water has been coming through the paving on the ground, and every time I look there is a new puddle somewhere.”

Joburg Water spokesperson, Isaac Dhludhlu was questioned about the leak on the morning of 16 April.

He then contacted the relevant Joburg Water depot, which repaired the leak later in the day.

Ward 102 councillor, David Potter said Joburg Water has a service-level agreement for 48 hours for burst pipes.

“All things being equal, such as teams’ availability and material,” he added.
