Curfew breakers open fire on Honeydew police officers

ZANDSPRUIT – Armed suspects opened fire on two Honeydew police officers on 8 February.

Two Honeydew police officers escaped a highly dangerous situation after armed suspects opened fire on them in the darkness of the morning near Zandspruit.

Honeydew police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan said the two officers were patrolling along Marina Road between Zandspruit and Itsoseng informal settlements during the early hours of 8 February.

The officers drove past three men standing in the dark at the intersection of Marina Road and an unknown road that leads to an electricity substation. As it was way past the time of curfew, the officers turned their vehicle around to investigate.
“The three noticed that they were being followed by the police and started running along the dusty road towards the substation. The three suspects started shooting at the police officers who had their blue lights on,” said Muthan.

The officers fired back at the suspects and one of the three men got shot in his rear, while the other two suspects escaped.
“The injured suspect was found lying on the ground with blood-soaked jeans and a pistol with live rounds next to him. There were two empty cartridges next to the suspect. The suspect was taken to the hospital by ambulance. It is not known if the other two suspects who escaped were wounded or not.”

A case of attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition was opened, and the arrested suspect will appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
