Delta Park is closed under Level 3 lockdown – City Parks

DELTA PARK – Delta Park, and most other city parks, is closed due to current Level 3 lockdown restrictions.

Joburg City Parks and Zoo spokesperson Jenny Moodley would like to discourage visitors from using Delta Park as the park was closed due to current Level 3 lockdown restrictions.

“We are aware issues of crime affecting visitors to Delta Park, and plans are in place to alleviate it. It should be strongly noted that visitors should not be using the park during this time under the current lockdown restrictions,” said Moodley.
Moodley added that only parks and public areas with access control were permitted to be used.

“Delta Park has very limited access control, and it’s almost impossible to monitor how many people are in the park at one time. It is for this reason that we have decided to close the park to the public under the tighter lockdown restrictions.”
She added that as the park was currently closed, visitors using the park were transgressing against Presidential orders and may be arrested, tried in court and fined.

She said the only park areas that were open to the public in limited numbers during the Level 3 lockdown were Joburg Zoo, the Wilds, and the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, as these areas have proper access control.
All other open parks with no access control were also closed to the public during this time.

Addressing the discussion of an alleged recent spate of crime in the park, Moodley said Joburg City Parks and Zoo had partnered with the teams of Jozi Trails to help with private security, and police were patrolling on the trails and spruit areas where crimes most commonly occurred.

“We strongly encourage our communities to comply with the rules of the Disaster Management Act and the advice of our President. If you see others using the park to exercise or for recreation purposes, do not be encouraged to join them.”
