Curro Aurora’s executive head details how the school dance in the rain

SUNDOWNER – Executive Head JC Engelbrecht reflects on the past year at Curro Aurora

Executive head of Curro Aurora JC Engelbrecht writes:
‘Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning how to dance in the rain,’ a quote from author Vivian Greene.

For me, as executive head of Curro Aurora, this well-known quote summarises our approach and the way in which we dealt with Covid-19 and the 2020 academic year. If we have learned anything from this year, it is that change is inevitable. As a school, we have learned to embrace the change.

The storm is still very much with us but thanks to the amazing effort from passionate, dedicated and innovative teachers, we managed to move teaching and learning online from the moment the lockdown started in late March. I’m proud to say that at Curro Aurora, no child was left behind and, in-line with our promise of quality education, our pre-primary, primary and high school learners will safely finish the 2020 academic year with the full curriculum successfully covered. This, for me, is the true highlight of this year.

As a school community, parents, learners and teachers stood strong and brave in the midst of a global pandemic and watched as the world tried to cope with the consequences of the pandemic. A shout-out must go out to the Curro Aurora parents and guardians, who made the time and effort to support our learners, and to our learners who persevered despite the challenges they faced while studying from home. They all displayed true #bluepride.

At Curro Aurora, we look forward to the 2021 academic year and the renewed promise of outstanding academic, sport and cultural achievements. Lessons learnt during lockdown will enable us to continue to integrate 21st century learning tools – providing all Curro Aurora learners, from age 3 to Grade 12, with a platform to truly develop critical skills that include critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, leadership and information literacy.

As this year draws to a close, it is my prayer for all to be safe, to stand strong and to continue to dance in the rain.
