Local resident discusses GBV ahead of self-defence class

NORTH RIDING – Local resident is passionate about fighting against gender-based violence and women empowerment.

North Riding resident Rachael Narothum is a teacher at Northriding Secondary School and a finalist in Glow TV’s Mrs Uniworld competition.

Narothum is passionate about gender-based violence among other community issues. Before of her self-defence class hosted at the school, Narothum answered a few questions.

What does 16 Days of Activism mean to you?
It is a campaign against violence. It runs every year from 25 November to 10 December. Being a part of this campaign solution is not only for 16 days, it’s definitely a start but needs to continue. Together, let us take actions to support the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign. Individually, we are a powerful drop but together, we are a forceful ocean.

Why did you decide to commemorate this movement in this way?
As a woman, I stand against violence. Being a Glow TV Mrs Uniworld finalist, we strive to serve, help and empower while uplifting women and the nation at large.
Some women are vulnerable and don’t have the voice to speak up or even report incidents. This platform allows women to stand united, speak up and help empower others.

Tell us about the self-defence class?
I want to share helpful self-defence tips that every woman should know. Knowledge is power. I will be conducting it in my community and with educators of Northriding Secondary School.

Is there anything else you would like the Randburg community to know?
When you empower women, you empower the nation. Anyone willing to assist me in making a difference can reach me on my email, rachaelnarothum@gmail.com
