Man convicted for Blairgowrie puppy abuse

RANDBURG – Hai Deng pleaded guilty to two counts of animal cruelty.

A 32-year-old man has been convicted of animal cruelty and sentenced to three months direct imprisonment in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 24 November.

The Randburg SPCA’s head of inspectorate Shiven Bodasing, who appeared in court and led the evidence against the accused said, “Today saw justice done when Hai Deng pleaded guilty to two counts of animal cruelty.”

As reported in Randburg Sun on 11 November, Deng was arrested and taken into custody on 9 November after he was caught on video cruelly kicking and beating two helpless puppies.
Bodasing said the court had also declared Deng incompetent to own any animal for the following year. He would serve the three-month sentence in South Africa before being deported to his home country as he was a visitor.

“The message the court has sent the abuser is clear, cruelty will not be tolerated. To impose a custodial sentence on a first-time offender and visitor to this country is a just punishment.
“The court considered the interests of the community, the nature of the offence and the severity thereof and meted out a sentence, which in my opinion is robust and will serve to deter future offenders,” added Bodasing.

The two puppies involved in this matter have had rehabilitation and were now available for adoption.
“We are grateful that justice was served, and so quickly too. This is a lovely happy ending.”
