Golf and Daniella vs Leukemia
HONEYDEW – The Daniella vs Leukemia Golf Day was a perfect excuse for golfers to spend the day outdoors, exchange some playful banter and have fun on the greens for a good cause.
Eagle Canyon Golf Estate was the place to be on 29 October, as corporates and individuals pledged to help Daniella van Zyl (26), a Featherbrooke resident who is fighting a rare type of blood cancer called Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (Ph+ALL).
She was diagnosed in March and given eight months to live. Van Zyl has spent much of recent weeks in the hospital for chemotherapy sessions, biopsies, spinal taps and blood transfusions and was unable to attend the golf day.
Springbok legend and world cup winner, Tendai Mtawarira also showed his support for Van Zyl and attended the post-golf ceremony.
The golf day has raised R300 000 and counting for her ongoing treatment and a life-saving bone marrow transplant she needs.
Van Zyl’s medical aid does not cover the costs of the transplant so she needs to raise R1.5 million herself, for the procedure.
There is also not a single South African donor match for Van Zyl’s bone marrow so her search has gone worldwide.
“We are very happy with the turnout [at the golf day] and we have had a fantastic response in terms of donations,” explained the event’s co-organiser, Keely van Zijl.
“I want the golfers to have fun today and I want them to know that what they are doing is for a good cause.”
More information about Daniella van Zyl and how you can help her is available at the Backabuddy website
The website shows she has raised about R500 000 towards her R1.5 million target.
