Justice served for rape victim 10 years later

RANDBURG – Randburg Police Station Commander Brigadier Michelle Jones applauded investigating officer Lieutenant Colonel Lessing who worked tirelessly to secure the conviction.

Edson Strydom (36) was recently sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court for a rape committed in 2010.

Randburg police spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja said when the crime occurred, the suspect had threatened and forced his young victim into his vehicle while she was on her way to school.

“The suspect then drove off to a secluded area in Strijdom Park where he allegedly forced himself onto the victim. The victim was assisted by a taxi driver who saw her crying on the side of the road. Although the investigation took long due to the collection of important evidential material, at long last justice prevailed,” added Maja.
He said through intense police investigation, the suspect was tracked and arrested in 2017 and remained in custody until he was sentenced.

Randburg Police Station Commander Brigadier Michelle Jones applauded investigating officer Lieutenant Colonel Lessing who worked tirelessly to secure the conviction.
“The sentencing would serve as a deterrent to those would-be criminals, and we would like to warn others that gender-based violence will not be tolerated,” concluded Maja.
