After a massive burst on the main water pipe running along Bond Street near Pine Avenue occurred on 8 November, a resident’s wall was destroyed, resulting in two of their vehicles being crushed.

Pine Avenue resident Lucia Abusela shared her family’s experience of witnessing the event.
“The whole incident has been truly shocking. No water came rushing into our house but when our boundary wall fell over, we thought the world was ending. The wall came falling on top of the cars, causing a huge amount of damage,” she said.
Abusela added that due to their security wall collapsing, their home was exposed to the very busy vehicle and foot traffic of Bond Street.

“We had to erect our own temporary security fence at our own expense for protection. What is frustrating is that, besides our security company, we have very little security here. So obviously my family feels unsafe with this temporary fence. We feel like nobody is taking responsibility for this.

“We have lodged a claim with Joburg Water and we hope that they can fix the water problem, fix our boundary wall, and compensate us for the damages caused to our cars.”
Joburg Water’s Isaac Dhludhlu said any affected resident could lodge formal claims with Joburg Water which will be assessed accordingly.
