Local actor looks forward to movie premiere

RANDBURG – Actor, director and writer Stiaan Smith has lived in different parts of Randburg for the past 10 years.

In Toorbos Smith assumes the role of an actor and plays Johannes Stander, love interest of the main protagonist Karoliena Kapp played by Elani Dekker.

An AFDA graduate, Smith mused that the cast of Toorbos made it easy for him to bring the story, famous in the Afrikaans community, to life through his acting.

“It is a period piece. The character exists in the heads of many already so there was pressure to do justice to the character,” recalled Smith.

“It was important for me to approach the character just like any other, otherwise you will tear yourself apart.”

The differences between Smith and the Johannes character he plays in the film were highlighted in their mannerisms as well as how they speak.

“The character is very upper class and I am more of a slap-dash kind of guy,” laughed Smith.

Right now, Smith has continued to quietly develop screenplays as well as work as a freelance writer for a local soapie.

Toorboos premieres in theatres countrywide on 13 November.
