Suspect hides in roof after alleged shopping centre toilet mugging

RANDPARK RIDGE – A suspect retreated and hid in the roof of the Rock Cottage Shopping Centre in Randpark Ridge after allegedly mugging his victim in the centre's bathrooms on 5 November.

Honeydew police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan said that after the alleged mugging took place, the centre’s security guards quickly responded, trapping the suspect in the bathrooms with no escape route besides the ceiling.

Police and security guards from various companies monitored every exit and after a long stand-off, the suspect surrendered, climbing out of a ceiling service hatch onto a ladder near the centre’s car park.

At the scene, much damage was done to the bathroom’s ceiling, seemingly caused by the suspect retreating to an unknown location inside the roof.

A plastic imitation firearm and a knife were recovered on the scene. The victim’s goods were also recovered.
“The suspect has been arrested by our police members and will be held at the Honeydew Police Station to await his trial,” said Muthan.
