Local resident boasts crisp record to CD conversion

NORTH RIDING – The 82-year-old Bill Liebenberg has always loved music.

The piano player combined his love of music with a career in electronics and built ‘a modern Hi-Fi’ 20 years ago. Recently, Bill Liebenberg eagerly shared how his equipment had improved since he first spoke to the Randburg Sun in 2001.

“New technology has taken over, however, old technology hasn’t gone away completely,” offered Liebenberg.

Liebenberg restores and recovers cassettes, 78 revolutions per minute and 33 1/3 long play records. This is done using machinery he developed over 20 years ago. Liebenberg’s modern Hi-Fi was able to translate the scratchy records to crisp and clear CD forms. The Hi-Fi took 18 months to design and is not purchasable. The conversion can take up to a day’s work as Liebenberg is meticulous in his work.

Liebenberg was originally based in Bordeaux before he and his wife left their home of 37 years to stay in Limpopo for 18 years. The couple has returned to Randburg and settled in Celebration Retirement Village in North Riding due to the convenience which comes with living in the area.
