Shootout during Beverley Gardens house robbery

Randburg police spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja said the robbery occurred during daylight hours on 14 October.

Two suspects were arrested by Randburg police after an armed robbery and shootout at a house in Beverley Gardens.

Randburg police spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja said the robbery occurred during daylight hours on 14 October.

“Suspects broke into the house while the victims were at home and threatened them with firearms. They demanded valuables from the victims,” said Maja.

The police and private security officers were alerted and when security officers arrived at the scene, the suspects started firing their weapons injuring one security officer.

“The collaboration between the police and the security officers resulted in the two suspects being arrested. The injured security officer was taken to hospital to receive treatment.”

The 35- and 48-year-old suspects were found in possession of two firearms with their serial numbers filed off and ammunition.

“On preliminary investigations, it was further established that the getaway vehicle was stolen around Johannesburg. The firearms will be taken for ballistic testing to determine if they were not used in other violent crimes. Additional charges are not ruled out as the investigation continues.”

Acting Station Commander Colonel Andries Odendaal applauded both the police officers and security officers for their good work and collaboration resulting in the arrest.

The two men are expected to appear briefly in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court soon facing charges of house robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and attempted murder.
