King’s College siblings’ sporting prowess

The college's Jason Van Zyl said the school was incredibly proud of the siblings, hockey player Matthew Pretorius in Grade 11 and athlete Tessa Pretorius in Grade 9.

Two King’s College siblings are reaching new heights in their respective sports after stellar performances in various competitions throughout the year.

The college’s Jason Van Zyl said the school was incredibly proud of the siblings, hockey player Matthew Pretorius in Grade 11 and athlete Tessa Pretorius in Grade 9.

Matthew currently plays for Northside Gryphons in the U18a Johannesburg hockey league in which the outdoor championships have just started.

At the beginning of the year, he played indoor hockey in the PSI Gauteng league and his team won the U18 Gauteng series. Matthew played in the PSI Nationals in December last year in Cape Town where he played in the U18b side.

“They won silver and lost against the Eastern Province region. In the indoor championships, he has been invited for trials taking place during October to represent the indoor Gauteng Gryphons team. Due to Covid-19, there will be no nationals but only regionals, so regionals will take place in December,” said Van Zyl.

Towards the end of last year, Matthew’s sister Tessa was selected for the U15 Central Gauteng Athletic team and represented them in 300m hurdles and 400m sprints.

Nationals took place late November and the athletics season started early this year where she competed at U17 level as there is no U16 league at this current time.

“She participated in several Gauteng/Northern Gauteng meets and also participated in the Puma School of Speed and received a bronze in Potchefstroom in the 400m. She was invited to Sacssa Nationals U17 at the end of October but this is still on hold,” said Van Zyl.

Tessa will receiving full colours for her achievements.

Van Zyl added that the school hoped that the siblings would make a name for themselves in their respective sporting codes in their bright futures.
