The management, staff and residents of Garden Village extended warm wishes to treasured resident, Joan Kathleen McCann, who celebrated her 100th birthday on 5 October this year.
Joan grew up in Johannesburg and worked as a secretary before her marriage to Richard Robertshaw. She met Richard while he served in the British Army during WWII and they tied the knot in 1945. When their daughter, Sheila Ann, was born, Joan became a full-time mom. After 22 years of marriage, Richard sadly passed away in 1967. Fortunately, Joan is blessed with a granddaughter, a grandson and a little great grand-daughter of two and a half years.
Joan has always happily worked with her hands. She knits and makes dresses with particular skill and she is famous for her beautiful woolen cross-stitch cushion covers. Gardening is another one of her passions; she has kept her ‘green fingers’ and enjoys the beautifully landscaped gardens at Garden Village. Ticking off another item on her bucket list, Joan took up French lessons which she enjoyed thoroughly.
This social butterfly has made countless friends over the years and she kept in regular contact with them through letter writing. She equally enjoyed receiving letters and photos from family and friends. Undaunted by modern technology, she has mastered the iPad and takes great pleasure in using her smart device to keep in touch with family and loved ones.
Joan enjoys her retirement years at Garden Village where she has learnt to play Scrabble. As an avid reader she has a lot more free time to catch up on one of her favourite pastimes. She is a regular visitor to Garden Village’s well-stocked library, biographies being her favourite genre.
Everyone who comes into contact with Joan, family and friend alike, are always met with a cheerful smile. She is someone who always takes great interested in others. Indeed, there are many life lessons that we can all learn from this remarkable lady.
