Local lay Counsellor offers free self-care tips

Northwold resident Purity Chizhande has worked as an online volunteer counsellor at a call centre. As a registered lay counsellor, Chizhande was hyper aware of the effects lockdown would have on many who have developed mechanisms to cope which involved activities which were not allowed during hard lockdown.

With this in mind, Chizhande’s has provided simple remedies for self-care:

• Write in a Journal
Journaling is a great way to organise and process your thoughts. The activity helps one to come to terms with their situation, how they feel about it and brainstorm solutions.

• Move your body
Even if it means standing whenever you receive a phone call or making sure that you go for a run regularly. Now that the gyms have re-opened, this has become easier.

• Hydrate
Drinking water is a simple way to ensure that you are taking care of yourself.

• Meditate
This is one of many ways – some breathe deeply in a quiet space, other people meditate by doing something that they enjoy. The point is to relax, disconnect and allow yourself the opportunity to separate from thoughts about everyday life to gain clarity.

• Sleep well
One of the signs of depression is too much or too little sleep. It was important to maintain a healthy relationship with sleep as well as a good sleep schedule for general health. During lockdown, many disregarded the need to maintain a healthy relationship with sleep because of boredom or anxiety.

• Eating well
The right vitamins and minerals can make a positive impact on your mental and physical health.

• Ask for help
Help could come in many forms – practical help, professional help, emotional support – the list is endless. The counsellor emphasised that sometimes just knowing that you are supported and loved make a world of difference.
