Taxi crashes into a tree in Robindale leaving eight injured

ROBINDALE – ER24's communications officer Russel Meiring said that the driver was found trapped inside the vehicle.

Eight people were left injured after the taxi they were travelling in crashed into a tree on Malibongwe Drive and Gaiety Avenue in Robindale Monday afternoon, 5 October.

ER24’s communications officer Russel Meiring said that ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find the taxi on the side of the road against a tree.

Emer-G-Med team member Caitlin Kruger added that the collision took place around 3.20pm. She said vehicles on the road, travelling in the same direction, had stopped (due to traffic). The taxi’s brakes apparently failed when the driver tried to stop. “It hit a vehicle from behind and then crashed into a tree,” explained Kruger.

Meiring said that the driver was found trapped inside the vehicle while several others were walking around the scene. “Rescue medics used specialised tools to free the driver trapped from the vehicle. Once freed, medics assessed the patients and found that eight people had sustained minor to moderate injuries,” said Meiring.

The patients were treated and, thereafter, transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

Local authorities were on the scene for further investigation.
