Curro Aurora’s hosts charity fun run

SUNDOWNER – Over 500 shoes were collected for a worthy cause during Curro Aurora's annual 1km fun run.

Curro Aurora learners had a fun day of running and collected over 500 shoes for a worthy cause during their annual 1km fun run on 2 September.

Teacher and coach Jan van der Merwe said, “This year, we decided to collect used trainers that can be donated to children in underprivileged communities. We partnered with Hot 91.9 FM’s charity campaigns to help to distribute the 500 shoes that we have collected so far.

“We aim to collect 700 shoes for underprivileged communities in our area, and we know we will achieve way more than that.”

Every year, the school hosts the charity run to raise funds/goods and awareness about issues in communities nearby to them. Learners across all grades braved the chilly conditions of the morning to warm up nicely in the fun run activity.

Usually, the atmosphere of school spirit is high with hundreds of learners from the pre-primary to high school joining in the fun and celebrating their fellow learner’s achievements, but this year had to be a lot different due to Covid-19 social-distancing measures.

“We decided to hold the run over two days, having small groups of learners in each grade running the 1km course that we have laid out for them on our sports fields. Only 50 per cent of our children are back at school, so we hope that this will be a fun day of physical activity for them for this worthy cause,” concluded Van der Merwe.
