A busy time for Saint’s community efforts

LYME PARK – St Stithians College youngsters recently helped out the Society for Animals in Distress, the Diepsloot Methodist Church, and a school in the Lanseria informal settlement.

St Stithians College learners have been working hard over the Covid-19 lockdown period to keep their community engagement efforts going strong.

“Due to our country’s lockdown regulations, participation in community engagement in line with St Stithians’ philosophy of service through presence has been more challenging this year, however, the need for this service and assistance is greater now than ever before,” said school chaplain Lisa Moseneke.

Recently, the school’s youngsters helped out the Society for Animals in Distress, the Diepsloot Methodist Church, and a school in the Lanseria informal settlement.

St Stithians Girls’ Preparatory School Grade 3 class representatives organised a delivery of pet food for the Society for Animals to use for the animals they take care of. They also organised cleaning supplies to help keep the large animal hospital clean and sanitary.

The Society for Animals in Distress is a veterinary care provider who services the local communities, with particular focus on low income and indigent communities.

Kwena Molapo Pre-School is situated in the Lanseria informal settlement. It provides care and early childhood education to about 60 children in the area and the pre-school also provides meals to the children in the community.

The Grade 4 girls at St Stithians College chose to partner with Kwena Molapo to try to help meet some of the needs of the children that they work with. “They chose to partner with Kwena Molapo to try to help meet some of the needs of the children that they work with,” said Moseneke.

“The class representatives visited to deliver food, cleaning supplies, and sanitiser to help Kwena Molapo to continue to provide nutritious meals that feed the growing children who visit them daily.”

The girls of Grade 7 partnered with Diepsloot Methodist Church to help meet some of the needs of the community of Diepsloot.

“Representatives of the Girl’s Prep Grade 7 class, facilitated by Carolien Els, delivered non-perishable foodstuffs as well as sanitary towels to Diepsloot Methodist Church in support of their continued ministry in the community.

“Our students didn’t let the lockdown in South African affect their ability to make a world of difference and although all Covid-19 protocols were observed and masks are worn, their hearts remained unmasked and they have continued to carry our many acts of kindness. These are just some examples of helping others through these challenging times.”
