One suspect arrested after Randburg store robbery

RANDBURG – One suspect was arrested after a robbery took place in the Randburg CBD on 18 August.

The Randburg police arrested a 47-year-old suspect after a robbery took place in the Randburg CBD on 18 August.

Randburg police spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja said in the late afternoon, members of the crime prevention unit received a complaint of an armed robbery.

“They swiftly responded to the complaint where an unknown number of suspects had allegedly already threatened the staff members of the retail store with firearms and taken an undisclosed amount of cell phones and cash,” he said.

When the suspects ran out of the shop, they were spotted by the responding officers who gave chase.

“Our officers chased down the suspects and successfully arrested one of them. He was searched and found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Upon further preliminary investigations, a bag loaded with cellular phones was recovered as well.”

The other suspects managed to get away and the police were currently following up with the information provided to them to bring them to book. The recovered firearm would be sent to ballistics to determine if it was used in the commission of other violent crimes.

The Station Commander of Randburg Police Station Brigadier Michelle Jones applauded the members for their swift response and the arrest. The suspect is expected to appear briefly in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court to face charges of business robbery, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
