The youngsters, parents and staff of Curro Aurora decided to use some wise ingenuity for their Mandela Day efforts on 22 July by collecting food to make ‘jars of hope’ for those in need.

“We decided to encourage our learners and staff to collect non-perishable food items that could be turned into ‘jars of hope’ that will be given to many homeless people who are facing hardship, especially due to the current Covid-19 crisis,” said the school’s executive head JC Engelbrecht.

Jars with a collection of dried food were put into hundreds of jars that would be conveniently turned into a meal to feed up to four people, simply by adding boiled water. “Our youngsters, with the help of their parents, worked tirelessly over the weekend to make this all possible, and I have to give a massive word of thanks for this effort. This is all in aid of helping our nearby communities, and we also helped to knit over 200 beanies and scarves that will also be donated,” said Engelbrecht.

Many of the items were donated to homeless communities near to various parks and those living in open areas in Sundowner. Many of the goods were also donated to a local radio station to be distributed to areas they have identifies as in need.

Engelbrecht added, “We were also happy to host a 5km virtual ‘Walk to Freedom’, which our youngsters and staff took part in to raise funds for our Mandela Day initiatives. We hope to continue to initialise like this throughout the year as we believe every day should be Mandela Day.”
