Ferndale resident makes top 35 in Miss South Africa

FERNDALE – Local resident makes top 35 in Miss South Africa's first-ever virtual qualifiers.

Kayla Neilson is in the top 35 of the Miss South Africa pageant this year.

The singer/songwriter, entrepreneur and commercial model based in Ferndale shared her story.

Why do you want to be Miss South Africa and what do you think you will be able to bring to the role?
As a young woman, I have gone through many experiences both good and bad. There are millions of people all over the world who are facing similar adversities and I strive to be a beacon of hope and touch as many lives as I can. I am compassionate, empathetic, brave, forward-thinking, impact and solutions-driven and dedicated to serve my purpose.

Being a musician has given me the opportunity to travel through almost every province in South Africa to interact with the privileged and the underprivileged. With that comes a true understanding of the adversities we face as a nation and how important it is to persevere and relay your message genuinely and responsibly. 2020 has been a tough year globally.

Do you see any positives in what has happened in the past months and weeks?
Through Covid–19, police brutality, rioting and looting and gender-based violence, we find community spirit. From social distancing to marching in solidarity. We have also become more aware of nature and how we treat our natural resources.

What is one thing you would like to change about South Africa?
The ongoing violence against women and children. Alcohol was banned during lockdown and domestic violence cases continued to rise. Which proves that this is not a substance problem, it is a human problem.

Who are your role models?
My grandmother, not just because she was possibly my favourite person in the world, but because she was a leader. At home and at work she was greatly respected. My mother, because even though she has faced sexual abuse, a cancer scare and fought alcohol addiction, displays resilience and inspires me to never give up and be my best every day.

What is your message to young girls and young women in South Africa?
You are beautiful, resilient, brave, intelligent and capable. Your future is in your hands, you can achieve anything you set your mind to, as long as you focus on your journey and believe in yourself.

Describe yourself in three words:
Authentic, driven, strong.
