Robbery and fraud on the rise

LINDEN – If you're ever being asked to give your banking and card details over the phone, there's a very high chance you are getting scammed.

Linden Police Station has warned the public of an increase in common robberies and fraud taking place.

According to the station’s spokesperson, Constable Takalani Matumba, these crimes have been on the rise since South Africa moved to Level 3 of the lockdown on 1 June.Matumba warned the public to remain vigilant at all times. She said, “People must look out when they are waiting or queuing, especially at the post office and grocery stores. Criminals are looking for an opportunity while you stand.” Those taking jogs are advised to leave any valuables at home and provide the route of their run to someone they live with.

People have also been robbed in parks such as Delta Park. “People are not allowed to be in parks, so the criminals are taking advantage of those people walking in the park and robbing them of their valuables.”

Matumba also warned the public to be careful when purchasing goods online. The station has seen a rise in cases being opened due to complainants not receiving what they had ordered after they have made payments online. Fraudsters are also targeting the elderly by calling them and saying they are representing a bank. “They [fraudsters] will ask you to give them the last number of your credit card and by so doing you will be defrauded and your money will be stolen instantly.”

Police have reminded the public not to provide any banking details over the phone as banks would not request this.
