Two suspects arrested after Cresta Youth Day shootout

Police and security guards performed a stellar job in the arrest of two suspects after a robbery and hijacking occurred at Cresta Shopping Centre during the late afternoon of Youth Day on 16 June.

Gauteng Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele said that four suspects were driving a white Toyota Etios and an Opel Corsa that had allegedly been hijacked, in the shopping centre’s parking area. The suspects reportedly robbed a well-known supermarket and fled the scene.

“On their way out, they allegedly robbed a couple of their cell phones and other items,” said Makhubele.

While attempting to flee the scene, the suspects were met by police and security guards. The suspects opened fire on the police and security, and a shootout occurred.

“One suspect was shot and taken to hospital, where he is currently under police guard, and another suspect was arrested at the scene. The other two suspects fled on foot,” said Makhubele.

The police also established that the getaway car that had been used during the incident was an e-hailing taxi. They were also able to recover one firearm some items that had been stolen during the incident, as well as an allegedly hijacked Opel Corsa.

The arrested suspects will appear in the Randburg Magistrates Court soon.
