Curro Aurora steps in to assist the community during lockdown

Curro Aurora High School learners and teachers have been doing their part for the community at large during the nationwide lockdown. The school has been supporting Blairgowrie based charity One Small Act of Kindness by donating sandwiches, muffins and fresh fruit bought or made by learners and teachers.

These get distributed daily to the communities in Zandspruit, Diepsloot, Alexandria, Claremont and many other informal settlements.

Curro Aurora educator Nicole Webb said, “The children in these communities that would have relied on a meal provided for them at their schools have now been suffering without that; however, the promise of a fresh sandwich and muffin has put a smile back on these children’s faces.

“This charity drive started as a small personal project for myself, where I chose to donate 60 muffins and 60 sandwiches once a week. I decided to open this up to the Grade 12 learners to donate for one day. I was so overwhelmed by how this project just snow-balled ? three weeks into lockdown I am delivering about 200 sandwiches and 100 muffins per day.”

Learners from all grades have started to donate willingly daily. “Every evening I cannot even see my kitchen counters as they are just stacked with bread, muffins, fruit, masks, and any other items people have decided to donate,” continued Webb. One Small Act of Kindness is housing 35 homeless men in their Fontainebleau shelter during the lockdown.

Webb said, “These men spend their days assisting the charity in packing over a thousand food parcels per day which get distributed to needy families all over Gauteng. The Curro Aurora teachers provided these men with a delicious home-made lunch to thank them for all their efforts. Once again, a once-off project also just grew – through the parents of Curro Aurora we have subsequently managed to provide these men with another four home-cooked meals.”

Lockdown is extremely tough and emotionally draining on the majority of us, but it has been so heart-warming to observe how the learners, staff and parents of Curro Aurora have come together to support those around us who are in a much worse predicament than we are. Lockdown has taught us many hard lessons; taught us the value of the small things in life; and taught us the value of humanity. We are so grateful for the values our students have demonstrated.”
