Ann Harding home more than able to cope with lockdown

Unfortunately due to the lockdown laws, family members and other visitors have not been able to visit their family who are in the home for the time being.

Residents of the Ann Harding Cheshire Home in Boskruin have been keeping their spirits up during the national lockdown.

The home’s residents have been under lockdown since even before measures were announced by the President on 26 March.

“We took precautionary measures due to the vulnerability of our residents two weeks prior to the official lockdown, and have kept safe hygiene practices up the entire time. Our charity shop was closed to the public, residents were not allowed to go out, and we were closely monitoring the situation,” said the home’s Lorraine Tebbutt.

She said that their residents have banded together in community spirit and their response to the situation has been beyond remarkable.

“We were very worried about our residents. They love having people come and visit them, and that has, unfortunately, had to be placed on hold. There is however a WhatsApp group that our volunteers communicate with them on, so our residents have enjoyed reading uplifting messages from them each day,” continued Tebbutt.

Unfortunately due to the lockdown laws, family members and other visitors have not been able to visit their family who are in the home for the time being.

However, this has not stopped many residents from making use of modern technology to stay in touch with their loved ones. Messages of motivation and support have also been printed and placed in various spots throughout the home.

She said that residents have stuck together and taken part in various activities to keep themselves entertained, including bingo, arts and crafts, movie nights and various other social activities. “A very special word of thanks needs to go out to our nursing and cleaning staff. They have been working tirelessly and are the engine that keeps this home going. We value them and all who have contributed to our home during this time,” said Tebbutt.

The Ann Harding Cheshire Home is a residential care facility for adults, between the ages of 18 and 54, who have a physical disability. The majority of their forty residents have taken up permanent residence having become permanently disabled as a result of motor vehicle accidents, violence and assault, strokes, degenerative diseases, and congenital disabilities.

Community members who may wish to contribute to the home during this time can visit www.annhardingcheshirehome.org.za for more information.
