Randburg restaurant owners and staff arrested for selling alcohol

The owner was also charged with bribery after he tried to bribe the officers to let them go and forget about the incident

A popular Malanshof pub-restaurant was raided by law enforcement officers on 6 May after officers received a tip-off informing them that the restaurant was selling liquor during the lockdown.

Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson Wayne Minnar said, “We received a tip-off that a well-established pub and restaurant was selling liquor via the back door. This of course would contravene the Disaster Management Act.

“Undercover Metro Police IIOC (Integrated Intelligence Operations Centre) Reaction Unit officers were monitoring the situation for a few days prior.”

After their investigation, officers made a break through, and with the help of the South African Police Service and security companies, the owner of the establishment was arrested, along with three staff members.

“We are also enjoying a huge success as over R200 000 worth of alcohol was confiscated,” said Minnar.

The owner was also charged with bribery after he tried to bribe the officers to let them go and forget about the incident.

According to Minnar, all suspects are currently being held at the Linden Police Station and will be awaiting trial.
