Five tons of maize meal donated to informal settlements

The residents of Chartwell banded together in community spirit to purchase and deliver over five tons of maize meal, to help nearby informal settlement communities on 28 April.

“It was such a great success on their part to be able to raise enough funds for this worthy cause. We helped to deliver around 600 bags of maize meal, and the community was so overwhelmed with joy,” said Douglasdale CPF Sector 2 chairperson Lizzy Mabena.

The drive was spearheaded by the Farmall Landowners and Residents Association, together with the residents of Farmall, Chartwell and Millgate.

Their collective efforts contributed money towards a maize meal fund for residents of the Msawawa Informal Settlement and the Fandisie Informal Settlement.

She added that the volunteers were not able to deliver the donation in one day due to the lockdown regulations, so deliveries had to spread over a period of three days.

“We aim to keep driving community support during this time. Teaming up together as a community is truly something special, and all communities should follow suit,” she concluded.
