Education through play in Olivedale

OLIVEDALE – Local non-profit, Care for Education shares on the importance of their work as it relates to childhood development.

Care for Education is a non-profit organisation that is partnering with the Lego Foundation to distribute Lego play-based resources to children, schools and organisations in need.

The organisation is based in Olivedale, but works with a number of partners around the country, to reach as many under-resourced child-centred organisations as possible.

Its programme manager, Linda Smith, said their main target is early childhood centres and foundation phase classrooms. “We promote the use of concrete tools which engage children and educators in playful teaching and learning.”

They do this by providing resources, mostly Duplo Play Boxes and Six Bricks, this is a tool to introduce learning through play into different settings. They also provide initial training, free of charge. The training for all those using the play boxes, demonstrates how to incorporate learning through play into their daily activities with children.

These play boxes are a mix of Duplo elements that enable children to handle the tool confidently and creatively. As while playing, children are encouraged to move, explore, imagine, create and interact with others and their surroundings. Guided activities with the Duplo elements can help children to develop the basic and foundation skills needed for all future learning.
