Delta Park during lockdown

DELTA PARK – Geoff Lockwood of Delta Park speaks about the state of the park during the national lockdown,

Resident manager of Delta Environmental Centre Geoff Lockwood spoke about life at the park while the national lockdown has been under way. Lockwood remarked on the contrast between life at the park before the national lockdown and now, while South Africans have been mandated to stay at home to flatten the curve and minimise the spread of Covid-19.

“The week going into the lockdown was very busy at the park. It was almost as if people were using the park as much as they could before it started,” recalled Lockwood.

While at the park, the resident manager of the lush and expansive Delta Park noticed one or two cars where people had come to walk their dogs during the national lockdown. Apart from that, the only other activity Lockwood had noticed was from the vagrants who lived in the depths of the wilderness at the taps for water.

As a renowned birder and bird artist, Lockwood has spent a great deal of his time during the lockdown on the roof of the Delta Environmental Centre. He has used the additional time to fix minor maintenance issues at the centre. The birder also observed the behaviour of the birds while on the roof. Since the lockdown, the birds have become more agitated in the presence of humans. They have also begun their migration in accordance with the season.

Lockwood mused that it was great to see that some things had remained the same, during this time of immense change and uncertainty.
