Covid-19: 76 quarantined patients cleared to return home

While 80 tested negative for Covid-19, four students with pre-existing medical conditions will remain in quarantine for further observation.

The Gauteng Department of Health gave 76 students who were under quarantine at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg the all clear to return home, on 4 April. The students were released by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande, and officials from the Gauteng Department of Health.

The students, part of a group of 80 from various Technical Vocational Training colleges who were in work placement at Chinese companies as arranged by the Sector Education and Training Authorities, arrived back in South Africa from Wuhan, China on March 20.

While all 80 tested negative for Covid-19, four students with pre-existing medical conditions will remain in quarantine for further observation. They are expected to be allowed to return home on April 7.

“We want to thank both the Gauteng Department of Health and Birchwood for caring for the students until now,” said MEC for Health, Bandile Masuku.
