The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) announced in a statement on 31 March that it is running a small project to check if prepaid electricity users are charged the right prices due to concerns about over-charging by some resellers.
The project will target the City of Johannesburg municipal area, City Power customers and direct Eskom customers.
Here is what you need to do to participate in the project:
- Send a clear picture of your full receipt for prepaid residential electricity via Whatsapp or email
- State whether you are a City Power or Eskom customer
- State whether you are registered for free basic electricity
- If the seller’s name is not on the receipt, state who you bought it from.
- If your prepaid meter is not run by City Power or Eskom, state the name of that business
“We’d like receipts from a few weeks, ideally for a full calendar month. This helps us check the charges for different usage blocks. We’ll take any receipts for prepaid residential electricity bought for City Power or Eskom direct customers in Joburg since 1 July 2019,” said Outa.
Customers are urged to not wait until the end of the month to send receipts. They can send the receipts as they buy or whatever they have in their records. “We’d like receipts sold directly by City Power and Eskom, and also by resellers like businesses and online sales.”
A report will be compiled by Outa and made public. Outa has assured customers that meter numbers will not be made public.
