Cosmo City and Zandspruit residents queue up to buy groceries on day 1 of the lockdown

RANDBURG – The streets of Cosmo City saw people walking languidly, some signalled to cars which passed by as there were no taxis available in the afternoon

Cosmo City shopping Centre saw queues which began as early as 6am on the first day of the lockdown. A local car guard confirmed that the lines which started outside Pick n Pay were formed an hour before the store’s scheduled open at 7am.

The lines at the shopping centre have continued to grow at midday. Many shoppers explained that they were not able to do their shopping before the lockdown, as they were at work. Some made their way to do additional shopping due to uncertainty around the next few weeks.

Diepsloot Police was seen patrolling the complex flooded with Cosmo City residents.

Citizens in the line were not one metre apart while they awaited entrance to the Pick n Pay and use of the various ATMs.

Zandpruit residents came out in their hundreds to buy food, supplies and medicine despite the call to stay at home. Many residents said that they were only paid today (27 March) and were still working yesterday (26 March), leaving this the only time that they were available to do necessary shopping.

As the queues filled, store owners were on hand to sanitise shoppers and regulate the number of people allowed in the stores.
