Twitter reacts: South Africans have their say after the first case of coronavirus is confirmed

JOBURG – The World Health Organisation has advised people to wash their hands frequently with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash with soap and water to prevent coronavirus from spreading.

On 5 March, the Department of Health’s Dr Zweli Mkhize sent shock waves across the country when he confirmed that the first case of coronavirus had hit the shores of South Africa.

South Africans have, however, been reminded that the risk that coronavirus poses is real. The World Health organisation has offered the following safety tips:

  • Wash your hands frequently with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash with soap and water.
  • Maintain social distancing of at least 1 metre between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth because once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.
  • Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately.
