The City of Johannesburg today, 5 March visited the community of Cosmo City to show their dedication in ending gender-based violence.
This is said to be the first of the many consultations the City will be making with the communities all around Johannesburg.

The City said that the fight against gender-based violence in Joburg is informed by an improved quality of life and development-driven resilience for all. “This is a commitment to improving social, health and safety conditions citywide.”

GBV can therefore be interpreted as any harm that is perpetrated against a person’s will; that has a negative impact on the physical and psychological health, development, and identity of the person #JoburgCares ^NS

#GenderBasedViolence does not only occur in the family and in general communities but it is sometimes perpetuated by the State through policies or the actions of agents of State such as police and other authorities #JoburgCares ^NS

The City added that South Africa has been confirmed to be a rape capital, “We are bent on fighting the scourge against gender-based violence, we are here to gather information from you as the community on how we can work together to combat it, let’s engage”.
“We want to know what organisations and safe havens are available to victims of gender-based violence in each community, where the gaps are, how we can fill those gaps and how we can work together.”
Director of Social Development, Thabo Mashego spoke to the Cosmo City community and said that all regions will be consulted to ensure issues and experiences at the grass-root level are understood.
