Johannesburg DA leader resigns to join former mayor

JOBURG – Ngobeni said he was proud to have served the DA as an activist for the past decade.

Johannesburg DA caucus leader Funzela Ngobeni has resigned as a member of the party and the regional leader to join former mayor Herman Mashaba’s new political party.

”I have no intention of dwelling too much negatively, as I know many of you are already battling to come to terms with the trajectory the party has taken lately. Suffice to say, I have taken the decision to join Herman Mashaba’s efforts, effective tomorrow [3 March] to build a new political alternative in South Africa which will put the people of our country at the centre of its efforts,” said Ngobeni in a letter written to the DA in Johannesburg.

Despite leaving the party, Ngobeni said he was proud to have served the DA as an activist for the past decade. The leader of the DA in Gauteng, John Moodey said the party was disappointed by Ngobeni’s resignation but wished him well with his new endeavours.

“The DA thanks Ngobeni for his dedication to the party and leading the DA caucus during October 2019 and February 2020,” said Moodey.

He added that the DA caucus would follow internal caucus rules to elect a new leader. “The Johannesburg region will be led by its deputy regional chairperson, Tsepo Mhlongo in the interim until a new chairperson is elected,” added Moodey.
