Restaurant theft on the rise in Linden

LINDEN – The Linden Police are warning patrons and restaurant owners to be vigilant.

After a spate of thefts at Linden restaurants, the Linden police are warning patrons and restaurant owners to be vigilant.

Linden police spokesperson Constable Takalani Matumba said that suspects are pretending to be patrons or restaurant staff.

“They aim to rob, and they mostly target cell phones placed on top of tables and handbags women put under tables or hang on their chairs,” she said.

In a recent incident on 9 January, a victim was eating at a fast-food restaurant on George Street in Ferndale when she fell victim to this type of crime.

“She was busy having supper with her family and allegedly holding her cell phone in her left hand. A male suspect who was sitting by the table next to her suddenly stood up and grabbed the cell phone out of her hands and ran to a Toyota that was parked outside with other suspects to speed off,” said Matumba.

The Linden police would like to advise the community to look after their property when sitting and dining at restaurants and report crime when it happens.
