The Mosaïek Teatro in Fairland was the venue for this year’s provincial matric results announcements. On 8 January, matriculants from all over Gauteng, along with their parents, teachers, and families were present to find just how well they did compared to the other top learners.

The only province to do better than Gauteng this year was the Free State with a pass rate of 88.4 per cent. With Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga, Gauteng Premier David Makhura, MEC for Education and Youth Development Panyaza Lesufi and many other leaders from the province, the ceremony was sure to be one of class.

MEC for Education and Youth Development Panyaza Lesufi was one of the proudest people present on the day. The well-known champion of youth development and education stated that the gap between schools in townships and suburbs is very close to disappearing. He said this is proof that the system is doing all it can to level the playing field for all learners regardless of where they come from and where they attend school. Lesufi also mentioned that Gauteng is now the highest contributor to university entrance in the country. Gauteng is also home to the top three districts in the country and holds 15 of the top 20 districts nationally.

He hoped that these achievements will go on to be bettered in the future as he hopes the province gets a 90 per cent pass rate and over 60 per cent bachelor admission.
